Urgent! Scala + Scala.js with Laminar Engineer Job Opening In Gdańsk – Now Hiring Scalac

Scala + Scala.js with Laminar Engineer

Job description

🚀 Senior Scala Developer – Modernizing a Desktop App Stack

We’re looking for a Senior Scala Developer to join a small and passionate engineering team tackling a technically complex challenge: migrating a Scala + JavaFX desktop application to a modern UI stack—component by component, not via full rewrite.

This role isn’t for everyone—but if you enjoy deep technical work, figuring out hard integration issues, and working with cutting-edge Scala tooling (including Scala.js and Laminar), this is a rare opportunity to shape a migration roadmap and work hands-on at the architectural and implementation level.

🌟 Why this role could excite the right person:

  • Scala-first environment: The team loves Scala and is fully committed to staying in that ecosystem.

  • UI migration project: You’ll lead and implement a gradual transition away from JavaFX to something modern, possibly Scala.js + Laminar (the team has ties to Laminar development).

  • Real technical depth: You’ll work with advanced web components (like 3D charts), embed them into desktop workflows, and solve hard rendering and integration bugs.

  • Impact & ownership: You’ll be a core contributor in defining both the technical migration path and the execution strategy.

🛠️ Tech Environment:

  • Languages: Scala (heavy usage), some Java, limited legacy C interop

  • UI Libraries: JavaFX (legacy), Laminar / Scala.js / possibly ReactJS

  • App Type: Desktop app with web components

  • Tooling: Custom or hard-to-replace integrations with Excel and low-level libraries

✅ What we’re looking for:

  • Strong Scala experience (with Scala.js)

  • JavaFX familiarity (basic knowledge is fine)

  • Experience with web technologies, preferably ReactJS (mid/senior) or Laminar (senior)

  • Comfort navigating Java and C interop, especially to debug and patch legacy issues

  • A mindset for incremental refactoring, architectural problem-solving, and technical ownership

⚠️ What you should know upfront:

  • This is not a greenfield project—there’s technical debt and legacy code.

  • Some of the tooling (e.g. Excel/Java/C bridge) is fragile and no longer maintained.

  • The team has high standards and strong opinions.

Expect minimal hand-holding but full technical autonomy.

  • It’s a role for someone who loves technical puzzles, not shiny frameworks.

  • The project is for 3 months with possibility of prolongation

  • The hourly rate is up to 40 EUR/h.

If you thrive in environments where others might walk away, and you enjoy being the one who figures out the “unsolvable,” this could be a truly rewarding project.
